TGIN Moist Collection - Product Review

If you’re looking for a complete hair system, you may want to turn your attention to the new TGIN Moist Collection.  It is almost inconceivable to find a complete product line that you are pleased with.  It’s like getting a CD that you can play all the way through without skipping any tracks a ’la that oldie but goodie, Mary J Blige My Life.  It’s still everything!  Anyway, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to check out the system for myself and I couldn’t wait to share my experience.  It’s rare I get the opportunity to use an entire collection at one time so I was so excited!  The great thing about a system is it’s designed to work together for optimal results.

“Kiss Dry Hair goodbye”

First up in the system, the shampoo.   After cleansing my hair with the Moisture Rich Sulfate Free Shampoo, I applied the Triple Moisture Replenishing Conditioner while in the shower.  It’s creamy, non-watery texture was the first thing I noticed.  It was not too watery but still had sud power.  (I was unable to determine what ingredient was responsible for the suds).  Depending on who you talk to, there is a point of contention surrounding whether or not a sulfate free cleanser offers the lather that many appreciate with the shampoo experience so this was a nice surprise.  It contains very mild, gentle cleansers, which is what you want in a sulfate free shampoo.  You want it to cleanse, but not strip.  I allowed it to sit on my hair for a few moments and then rinsed with cool water. 

After rinsing it was on to the Replenishing Conditioner.  The moisturizing properties were not a surprise as it contains Shea butter and essential oils.  It also contains Stearamidopropyl Dimethylamine (the 5^th ingredient to be exact), which is a common ingredient in shampoos and conditioners.  The key with this ingredient is it provides the slip you need without all the buildup because it’s water soluble; making it    easy to rinse, which may sound like a given but some conditioners seem to take forever to rinse out.  If you check the ingredients and you don’t see this listed as one of the top 5 (which is usually is), you may notice it may take you a little longer to rinse and this could be why.  After completing my normal shower rituals, I rinsed with cool water.

I then sectioned my hair into 6 sections and distributed a moderate amount of the Honey Miracle Hair Mask for a deep conditioning session (30 minutes).  I’ve said repeatedly that I deep condition every time I cleanse due to the permanent color I subject my hair to.  Due to my tightly coiled curl pattern, I do experience a lot of tangles and knots which is simply par for the course for my hair type.  This mask does a great job of separating my curls, making the sectioning/detangling process easier to manage.  I do my best to undo the damage caused by fighting tangles and knots by weekly deep conditioning and bi-weekly protein treatments. 

After rinsing the mask, I went on to apply the Butter Cream Daily Moisturizer.  I treated this as more of a leave in cream.  I always arm my mane with a leave in.  It gives that added protection I deem necessary to maintain the health of my hair.  My tresses were extremely malleable and this served as the perfect landscape for the next step in the process- styling. 

When it was time to style, I reached for the Twist and Define Cream.  It smells great, feels great and left my hair downy soft.  I’ve used this on both wet and dry hair.  I typically style on dry hair again as a way of preventing as much tangling and knotted hair as possible.  However, I found that the twist and define cream yielded the best results on wet/damp hair which is to be expected because the first ingredient is water.  Water, as we all know, causes hair to revert back to its curly/natural state so if you are wanting a stretched style, I wouldn’t use a product with water as the first ingredient.  Just something to note.  The twist cream provided maximum hydration and minimal frizz.  My hair really played well with this entire line.  Please visit TGIN to see for yourself and I’d love to hear your experience with it.  Thanks Chris-Tia!

Wonder Curl Restoring Deep Treatment, Product Review

When I heard of Wonder Curl’s new Restoring Hair Treatment I couldn’t help but get excited.  As someone who colors her tresses, and sometimes, dare I say it….uses bleach to get the light look I desire, anything extra I can do to treat and restore catches my eye! 

“An intensive deep hair treatment that strengthens, moisturizes and smooths your hair”

Ingredients: Aloe barbadensis (Organic Aloe) Juice, Shea Butter (refined), Cetearyl Alcohol, Avocado Butter, Ricinus communis (Castor) Oil, Polyquaternium, Tamanu Oil, Guar Gum, Olive Oil PEG, Hair Vitamins, BTMS, Stearalkonium Chloride, Phenoxyethanol, dl-Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5), Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Cocos nucifera (Coconut RBD) Oil, Vegetable Glycerin, Limmnanthes alba (Meadowfoam) Oil (Refined)

I used this as you would any deep conditioning treatment.   After cleansing with the Detoxifying Clay Cleanser (check out my review of this product here, also from Wonder Curl, I applied this to my hair root to tip, ensuring maximum coverage and thorough distribution.  I left it in for 20 minutes under the protection of a plastic cap and rinsed.  I didn’t use any heat with this treatment as the instructions did not call for it.  I believe the natural heat from my scalp is enough to get the maximum benefit.

My hair was pillow soft thanks to the aloe, shea butter and the hydrolyzed wheat protein this contains.   Most of us are familiar with aloe and shea butter but a real quick definition of Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein; it is a moisturizing and conditioning protein derived from whole wheat.  In addition my hair responds kindly to protein so seeing this on the ingredient list was great.   I truly felt like I had just done something major after rinsing!  Each strand felt nourished and ready for anything.   I can’t say enough about this line.  Thanks again to my sister in the name of hair, Scarlett for putting me on.

Why I’m Sweet on Karen’s Body Beautiful’s Sweet Ambrosia, Product Review

I am and have been a fan of Karen’s Body Beautiful, the entire line - no surprises there.  If you follow me on any social media outlet, you already know this.  In fact, most of her line is a regular part of my hair rituals.  All leave -ins are not created equal and believe me when I tell you, there is no mediocre when it comes to this leave in.  I put that on everything.  You know that feeling you get when you finally got it right?  After years of trial and error, mad money spent and lessons learned, BOOM it happens.  You find that formula that works for you and your tresses.  I had this aha moment about 2 ½ years ago when I tried Karen’s Body Beautiful’s Sweet Ambrosia (formerly known as Hair Milk) and  I’ve been sweet on it ever since.

The blast of moisture is off the charts

Extremely moisturizing – yes my hair can tell the difference when I don’t use it.  I typically only use it on the event day, otherwise known as the cleanse day.  Every now and then if I must retwist/rebraid, I will add a bit.  However, the majority of the time, it is not necessary.  The consistency is that of a lotion, which is perfect, not too runny, not too thick but just right. :)

You will be febreezed

Pick a smell, any smell.  There are 8, count ‘em, 8 fragrances, including an unscented version.
I’ve tried pomegranate guava, lavender oatmeal and honey oatmeal.  Oh wait and lavender vanilla.  Each more yummier than its predecessor and I refuse to pick a fave.  I’ve been a victim of febreezing in the past so I think other people agree.

Although I love the pump style dispenser, Karen Tappin, owner, creator of the line recently took to Instagram with a teaser about the bottling.  It will soon be available in tube form to which I responded “I don’t care how you bottle it, it will be on my shelf”.  I am not sure if the new tubes will be in lieu of the pump bottle or in addition to but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the in addition to option.

At $16 for 8 ounces, it can be a bit of a splurge but I'm up for the splurge and I don’t have one ounce of buyer’s remorse.

Scent

Qhemet Biologics Cocoa Tree Detangling Ghee has a very deep cocoa butter scent. The Amla and Olive Heavy Cream has a light citrus scent.

Price

At $18.99 (8oz) for the Cocoa Tree Detangling Ghee and $16.99 for the Amla and Olive Heavy Cream (8oz) these products were a bit of a splurge for me.

Does it live up to its own hype?

Absolutely, the Cocoa Tree Detangling Ghee fearlessly stood up to my kinks and coils, detangling my poor neglected tresses in no time at all. The Amla and Olive Heavy Cream is nice and thick, leaving my hair soft, and moisturized for over a week.

How do you rate a product?

Cocoa Tree Detangling Ghee and Amla and Olive Heavy Cream gets and 8 out of 10 from me. These are great products, and worth the money (IMO). Biggest drawback is that I have to buy these products online.

Curl Rehab Moisturizing Hair Treatment, Product Review

I had been wanting to try this product for quite some time but I wasn’t quite ready to see if it was worth the cost.  I finally broke down and purchased it after winning a Curl Mart gift card so I basically copped it at no charge.  What better time to try a new product, right?  Here it is…

Ingredients

Scent

I purchased the Gardenia Coconut Scent and boy does it smell good!  It is a bit strong but it didn’t bother me because it’s not a floral scent. 

Consistency

It has a very cream consistency and does not leave any greasy residue on your hands.  It comes out easily and application and distribution is a breeze.  My hair absorbed it quickly.  

Cost

The cost is $20 for 8 oz…pretty steep.  I only got about 4 uses out of it so I’m not too pleased with that.  It may be my only reason for not repurchasing, which I have not decided on as of yet.   

How I used it  

After shampooing, I applied a generous amount, paying special attention to my ends to my sectioned hair.  I then placed a plastic bag over my head and allowed the treatment to marinate for about 45 minutes.  The instructions indicate for deep conditioning leave on for at least 15 minutes but I got busy with household chores so I left it on a little longer before rinsing.  My hair was super soft and felt very moisturized, which is all you can ask for in a deep conditioner.

I am not particularly crazy about conditioner in a jar because it makes ease of use a challenge.

Victoria Secret So Sexy Curl Shape and Define Conditioner, Product Review

While this is not my staple conditioner, it is definitely one I reach for often enough.  It does what it says it will do and for that reason, it’s a keeper.  Let’s get into it.

Ingredients

The ingredients are not bad, however, there are cones listed throughout so if you are not a fan of cones, I suggest using an anti residue after use.  It is for this reason that I do not use it every week, but I do like it and plan on repurchasing.  It also contains glycerin, so if your hair doesn’t agree with glycerin or you only use glycerin during certain times of year, be aware.  Water is the #1 ingredient on the bottle which is a huge plus.  I apologize but I could not find a comprehensive list of ingredients anywhere online.

Directions

After shampooing, massage into wet hair from roots to ends.  Rinse thoroughly.  Towel dry and follow with So Sexy Shape and Define Curl Cream, which I also purchased, in addition to the So Sexy Color Protect & Revive Conditioner.  I will review these at a later date but I haven’t used these two as much.

Product Claims

Fights frizz for shiny, controlled, curly style.  Curly/Wavy Hair.  Infuses curls with moisture for added spring and energy.

Scent

I am not normally a flowery smell type girl but this scent is “certified date friendly”.  It is so feminine and clean and it makes you feel sexy, go figure!  It’s light and not at all overpowering but remains present after rinsed.  It’s the kind of scent that will make someone close do a double sniff.   Not surprising, fragrance is the 4^th item on the ingredient list.  

Consistency

It has a very cream consistency and does not leave any greasy residue on your hands.  It comes out easily and application and distribution is a breeze.   

Cost

The cost is $12 which is about what you would expect from Victoria’s Secret.  However, when I made my purchase it was on sale (3/$24) so I didn’t pay full price.  I would not use this as a co-wash because of the price.

Curb Appeal

It is packaged in the cutest slender bottle and your eye is automatically drawn to it.  This sounds crazy but the bottle itself is sexy.  It’s curved at the bottom with a flip lid, which is nice because the lid doesn’t slip out of your hands in the shower.

How I used it  

I applied a liberal amount of the conditioner just as I would any normal conditioner after shampooing my hair.  It has tons of slip and left my hair extremely soft and moisturized and the scent lingers even after rinsing, which is great.  It’s almost like a perfume for your hair.

Aubrey GPB Balancing Conditioner, Product Review

Almost a year ago I read a review of this product from my girl Lola of Lola’sGreenHair, #shoutouttoLola, and I immediately took a trip to Raisin Rack to make a purchase.  It was right on time because I was in search of a good protein treatment to try, whether it be homemade or something off the shelf.  Since I am addicted to color, more specifically bleach, protein is lacking in my strands.  I had been experiencing quite a bit of shedding which I attribute to poor diet and of course, the color.  Keep in mind, protein is one of those tricky things because too much of it can cause an imbalance between moisture and protein levels.  You run into the danger of protein overload as well so I only use it monthly (sometimes I skip a month but not often) As with any product, hair or otherwise, your hair will tell you how much you need, if you are using the right type of protein, etc. all by the way it responds. It is important to take notes and document your results in order to narrow your hair needs down.  Let’s get to the review.

Ingredients
Coconut Fatty Acid Cream Base, Aloe Vera (Aloe Barbadensis) Leaf Juice, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat Germ) Oil, Lactalbumin, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Oil (Organic), Sage (Salvia Officinalis) Oil (Organic), Horsetail Extract, Coltsfoot Extract, Nettle (Urtica Dioica) Extract, Amino Acid Complex (Cysteine, Methionine), Glycoprotein (from Oyster Shells), Balsam Fir Oil, Aubrey's Preservative (Citrus Seed Extract, Vitamin A, C, E)

Scent

Upon first sniff, it smells like a salon would smell when you first walk in.  It’s not really a pleasant smell but it didn’t make me turn up my nose either.  It just smells like product, nothing fruity or aroma therapy-ish about it.  I wish I could describe it better but I’ll say this, it’s not a product you choose for its scent.

Consistency

It has a very thick consistency but feels silky on your hands.  It has a very smooth application, however, you end up using quite a bit of product initially, particularly if you are applying it on dry hair.  Because of its thick consistency, it doesn’t come out of the bottle easily.  I had to turn the bottle upside down and convince it to come out, similar to how you handle a bottle of ketchup.  This is not a big deal, I just want to be clear that the product does not come out readily as say a regular creamy conditioner would. 

Cost

The cost is $10-$11 for 11oz. which is pretty much in line with other Aubrey Organics conditioner.  I think the cost is reasonable, considering it’s not a product you use every day and the results are satisfactory.  Sometimes you get what you pay for and I have not had an Aubrey Organics product disappoint me yet.

How I Used it  

I applied it to my dry detangled hair from scalp to ends and left it in for approximately 20 minutes for deep conditioning.  After which I shampooed like normal and proceeded with my hair care regimen.

Since I started using this product in July of 2011, I have seen some reduction of shedding so I believe it is doing what it is supposed to do.  I don’t believe anything will completely eliminate it short of allowing all of the color grow out.  It has been since April 2011 since I’ve had color/bleach application.  I am dying to recolor but I’m trying to retain length so I’m going to go without as long as I can.   As related to the cost, I still have the same bottle I purchased a year ago.  I probably have 2 more doses before I have to repurchase which I absolutely will do!  If you are experiencing shedding or problems with protein/moisture balance, I recommend you try this product.

Recently my bestee tried a new product- imagine that!  I asked her to take note of the experience and then share with Curly Chic readers! 

What made you try something new?

I ran out of product, so I decided to try something that I didn’t have to order and was easily accessible.  I purchased this at Macy’s.

How do you use the product?  (co-wash, freshshampoo,etc.)

I freshly shampooed my hair and applied a liberal amount to each twist.

Did you apply it wet or dry?

I applied it to my wet hair after shampooing and conditioning and adding my Kinky Curly Knot Today detangler/leave in conditioner.

How many braids/twists did you do?

I did approximately 8-10 twists total.

If you applied on wet hair how long did it take to dry?  Did you air dry overnight or use heat?

I allowed it to dry overnight  and slept with a satin scarf.

Did you have to use a lot of product? 

I didn’t need to use a lot of product at all.  I used just enough to cover each twist.

What is the consistency of the product?

It’s pretty thich but application was smooth and I felt as if it was evenly distributed.

When you took it down what was your first reaction?

I really liked it.  It appeared to have worked just as well as my other butter (I usually use Bee Mine products)

Results – frizz, softness, did it feel greasy or heavy, were curls defined?

It was extremely soft.  It was not greasy or heavy and my curls were defined.

Smell – how did it smell?

It had a nice smell and reminded me of beeswax.

How much was it for how many ounces?

$11.00 for 4 ozs.

Would you recommend it?

I definitely would recommend this product and will repurchase.

Carol's Daughter Hair Milk (The Original), Product Review, Yirssi Guest Blogger

 I gotta tell you... this will *ALWAYS* be one of my staple products. For me, this product is ahhh-mazing. This is the one and only product I ever use for wash and goes. The product in itself is white, and when I put it on my hair it does make my hair look white at first, but the hair absorbs it quickly, leaving no visible residue behind.

It defines my curls to perfection, gives them shine, and makes them pop without making them hard or crunchy. I used it almost daily when I was in that awkward TWA stage in which I could do nothing to my hair, since it made my curls pop more than usual during that boring stage.

However, it does have certain characteristics which may be cons to people. The first one is that even though it leaves no visible residue, there's a certain greasiness to it that you can feel. It's not as bad as other products I've tried, like the Healthy Hair Butter, and for me it's not really bothersome, but I know some people may not like it.

The second con, and the one that took me a while to get over, is the smell. One of the ingredients in it is Lemon Grass, and I swear, for a while ALL I could smell was lemon grass. It was pretty annoying. Thankfully, after a while of using it I got used to the smell, and now I hardly notice it.

There's a lot of ingredients, but they are pretty healthy for your hair. Some of them are: Water, Soybean Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Cocoa Seed Butter, Shea Butter, Cetearyl Alcohol, Polysorbate 60, Beeswax, Apricot Kernel Oil, Jojoba Seed Oil, Wheat Germ Oil, and Lemongrass Oil (among other things).

And once again, as I always say, you have to learn your hair. It works for me, but depending on your hair it may only work partially for you, or not at all. My hair is high porosity, and therefore extremely dry. It also has different textures all over (from 3B to 4a). But even if your hair is different from mine, you never know, it may still work for you!

I ordered the lavender vanilla scent.  Independently these smells are great so how you could go wrong with this collabo?  Not likely.  It met my expectations and more when I first unscrewed the lid.  Not too strong or overpowering.  Just the right amount of femininity without smelling like flowers and perfume.  I am a sucker for scents!  This actually should have been #1 on the list.

3.    Consistency

I expected a more creamy consistency so I was surprised to see a thicker product.  It’s not thick like a deep conditioner or mask, more like a pomade type thickness.  When I dipped my index finger in and began to rub it between my index and thumb, it became more like oil.  This explains the melting warning listed on the site.  This jar will definitely need to be stored in a cool place, much like my coconut oil.

4.    Packaging

All of the KBB products come in black containers.  *I also have shampoo, conditioner, as well as the Sweet Ambrosia leave in.  I have not used all of them yet.  I really like the look, reminds me of a little black dress; elegant and classy.  It’s nothing fancy with simple black lettering.  The sophistication is in the simplicity.

5.    The way it makes my hair feel

I applied this to my detangled mane after having it braided for two days.  The instructions on the jar suggest using it on dry hair for the best results.  I have found that it’s best to follow directions because the creator knows best.  My normal routine consists of dry styling anyway so this was a non issue for me.  I was unfamiliar with its use prior to purchasing.  I purchased it simply because it was a butter that I have wanted to try for some time now.  Oh…and because of the obvious, my addiction.  Styling butters and creams are my drug of choice.  I used about a dime sized portion on each of my 6 dry braids.  It slid on like “butter”.  As I took down each braid, I couldn’t help but make that sound you make when you are getting a massage.  You know the feel good moan?  That is how great my hair felt!  It was as if it had been looking for this product its entire natural life.  I found myself wanting someone else to touch it just so I could get them to co sign my thoughts.

Tangle Teezer - It's My Turn, Product Review

So, I shared a few weeks ago that I received my Tangle Teezer in the mail.   I couldn’t wait to try it because of all the hype surrounding it and because I have been on this quest for an emergency detangler.  Anyway, I went to Sally’s to purchase but wouldn’t you know it, turns out it was a Christmas item only!  Who knew?!  I ended up ordering it online from Sally’s through Amazon.com.  Go figure!  Anyway, it was $9.99 + shipping.  I also ordered one for my daughter as part of her Valentine’s Day gift pack J.  The blogs have been inundated with stories of what it does or doesn’t do so I was trying to wait for a minute to post my thoughts so here goes.

Miss Jessie's Curly Meringue, Product Review

OK so I finally tried it and honestly I expected to be disappointed.  I have always heard that the line is drying, the ingredients are horrible and that it leaves your hair starving for moisture.  Oh and the main complaint is always the cost!  A few bad reviews can turn you completely against something, unless you are a “PJ” like me and have to try it out for yourself.  I am a glutton for punishment I suppose.

Tomato, Tomahto - Yes To Tomatoes, Product Review

For some reason, lately no matter how many times I try a twist out on my hair, it ends up looking like a wash & go.  I have watched tutorials, tried multiple products.  I have tried little twists, big twists, every amount of twists, you name it!  It never turns out the way I want it to!  Do I have unreasonable expectations?  Have I just not found the right product for my hair?  What is it?!  Here is what I always envision when twisting. (I found this photo while perusing google!)  Bottom line, I have had no success as of late.  For now, I will stick to my braid outs.

On a more positive note, I did wash and condition my hair the other night and finally got a chance to use Yes To Tomatoes Volumizing Conditioner!  I really like it! 

I wasn’t happy about the $8.99 price tag because I know other people purchased it for only $2.99 at Ross.  We do not have a Ross in Ohio so I really had no choice if I wanted the product.   So here’s how it went!   Before shampooing, I finger - sectioned my hair into four sections and sprayed it with an olive oil/H2O mixture.  I then took a wide tooth comb and detangled each section.  It was not as tangled as I thought it would be!  I then applied Lustrasilk Shea Butter Cholesterol treatment to each section.  This was my first time using this as well.   I left this on with a plastic cap for 3 hours.  I then shampooed my hair in the shower with Trader Joe’s Nourish Shampoo and reached for the Yes to Tomatoes conditioner bottle.  The scent was very subtle but clean.  I applied a generous amount all over my head and then combed it through with my Ouidad detangler.  It was one of the easiest comb through sessions ever.  The comb just glided through so easily!  My hair felt extremely soft and moisturized and didn’t feel weighed down.  I also had a lot of volume, which is the claim on the bottle.  Since I cannot completely attribute the results to the Yes To Tomatoes alone, I will have to use it alone or as a co-wash to see how it truly delivers.  So for now, it was a hit for me!
