· Event
What is the occasion? How long will the event last? Is it taking place indoors or outdoors? If you are attending a wedding, you may opt for something more intricate and feminine. If your destination is a casual gathering, perhaps you can afford to be a little more laid back. A club atmosphere where dancing will be a part of the plan, may warrant a more fun, free spirited style.
· What You Are Wearing
Fashion and hair are equally influenced by each other. The two of them in conjunction with attitude and personal savvy are what makes up your style and flair. A flirty sundress may serve as the inspiration for your fierce braid out or the pumps and peplum skirt may put you in the mood for a tightly secured, more refined look.
· Texture, Curl pattern, Length
The possibilities for styles for your mane are endless, however, when choosing one, be mindful of your texture, curl pattern and length. Let’s say you want to rock a huge, disrespectful afro but your texture will not accommodate the look, you may need to think about a dry twist out as a plan B. While it may not be the look you initially wanted, you can still achieve the volume and make the look work for you. Eliminate unnecessary frustration by being realistic about your hair and respecting its boundaries.
· Weather and climate
Not surprisingly, weather plays a huge part in style choice. What is the dew point? Curly hair tends to get more curly, frizzy and challenging in humid weather. Is rain in the forecast? This will also be the deciding factor in the products you use to maintain the style.
· Time involved in achieving a look
How much time do you have to manage the look? Can you prepare overnight or is it a Rachel Ray (30 minutes or less) type situation? Access the time constraints and chose a look that fits within that time frame.
· Mood
Your emotional barometer can have an affect on your look, including the hair style you chose. Whether you are feeling energetic or somber, it can sometimes affect the way your wear your hair. The opposite is also true. How you wear your hair may affect your mood. If you are looking to pull yourself out of a rut, a colorful flower is an instant mood booster.
· Energy level
There are styles that require minimal effort and those that are almost works of art. More often than not, moms, busy career women and students have a lot on their “to do” list, and must prioritize. Sometimes, hair is not at the top of the list and as such can affect your look for the day.
· Trends
While the traditional hairstyles are always a good look, (braid outs, twist outs, afro, etc.) it is fun to experiment with the latest trends. Mohawks, shaved heads and fishtail braids are all great style ideas to try.
What factors do you consider when deciding what style to rock?
