Breakage Culprits - The Unusual Suspects

1.   Jewelry
What girl doesn’t love accessories?  But beware, that cute cocktail ring, chunky statement necklace and boss earrings could end up in a huge fight with your coils. As fly as they look, they will get caught in your hair and they will cause all types of snags and tears.  Here are a few small tips to mitigate the damage:
·   Style your hair in updos, buns or pinned up twists.
·   Turn necklace clasps around to the front.
·   If you have hand in hair disease, wear rings and arm jewelry on your least dominant hand because this is the hand you are least likely to put in your hair.

2.   Clothing Fabric
Fall brings about weather related challenges when it comes to protecting your strands.  I am not referring to the outdoor elements, which we are all too familiar with, (wind, rain, etc.)  I’m referring to those prized possessions that reside in your closet.  As temperatures drop, the inevitable need for coats, wool sweaters, and warm and toasty turtlenecks is quickly realized.  These things can all eat away at your ends.  The best thing to do?
·    Throw a silk or satin scarf around your neck to act as a barrier between your hair your clothing.  The constant, repeated friction between the two will rob your hair of moisture which leads to dry hair which leads to breakage.  Speaking of scarves…

3.   Scarves
As temperatures drop, the need to cover up becomes very apparent.  A must have, fall favorite accessory is a chic scarf to go around the neck.  Once the crisp air hits, it is almost second nature to grab one.  One problem with scarves, they want your neck all to themselves.  They are jealous creatures and if they are forced to fight your hair for attention, they will always win.  How to fight back?
·   Style your hair in updos, buns or pinned up twists.
·   Chose material wisely - wear satin or silk scarves so that your hair can slide up against the fabric with ease, thus eliminating snagging and tearing.

4.   Hats/Turbans
Hats and turbans are duo purpose and as such are favorites amongst naturals.  Not only do they keep your head warm during the colder months, they can serve as the missing piece to your wardrobe ensemble.  Not to mention that last minute event or errand that leaves little or no time to coif your mane.  A cute tam or printed turban is always a great solution.  However, the material is not always “strand friendly”.  Solution?
  • Wear a satin or silk scarf underneath the hat or turban to maintain moisture levels.  Otherwise, it is no different than sleeping on a cotton pillow case with your hair out.
