Dryness
What you need: moisture
What to do: shampoo with a conditioning shampoo, condition with a water based conditioner, use a leave in conditioner, deep condition weekly, protect those ends – See post on protective styling.
Tangles/Knots
What you need: moisture, proper detangling tools
What to do: use oils that penetrate (i.e. coconut, olive), use a creamy conditioner, incorporate pre- detangling into your shampoo routine, use the right tools – Tangle Teezer, quality wide tooth comb, Denman, fingers
*Trimming may also be in order. If you are not comfortable doing a self trim, visit your stylist as needed.
A big thank you to MopTopMaven for this tangle saver mixture – I made slight changes to this recipe and you can do the same.
4 ounces of Suave Almond & Shea Butter Conditioner
1 vial of Fermodyl 619
2 teaspoons of Aloe Vera Juice
Enough water to make it a light, spray-able consistency
Add all ingredients to a spray bottle, and shake to mix well!
Lightly spray on hair nightly and cover with a satin bonnet. This dual purpose spritz will help hydrate your hair during the harsh winter months; and eliminate the knotting dilemnas by lubricating your strands and keeping your cuticles flat which means little to no tangling and/or matting. This formula is light enough not to weigh your hair down, and is suitable for nightly use.
Breakage
What you need: moisture
What to do: use oils (or shea butter) to act as a sealant, perform a protein treatment, but be careful because some naturals and protein don’t play well together. Limit styles that pull the hair too tightly creating tension, don’t brush wet hair and don’t comb dry hair (without oil), ALWAYS sleep with either a satin bonnet/scarf or a satin pillow case. *During the winter, be mindful of hats and scarves that rob the hair of moisture.
*Trimming may also be in order. If you are not comfortable doing a self trim, visit your stylist as needed.
No growth
What you need: moisture
What to do: Be sure to trim when needed, minimize hair manipulation, maintain good nutritional habits, including plenty of H20 and consumption of multivitamin). See this post for a healthy hair meal to try. Minimize heat usage, give yourself or have someone give you a scalp massage, a proven growth stimulator.
*Trimming may also be in order. If you are not comfortable doing a self trim, visit your stylist as needed.
Have you noticed the resolution key word in all of these issues? Moisture! Gotta have it!
